If it's Stick shift, there are two plugs on the side of the transmission, the top one is for checking fluid level. Unless you like to get real dirty crawling around under the car, take it to an oil change place. I agree with you, dealer may be expensive, but they may definately be cheaper in doing this check than a cost of new tranny.
