What is causing ocassional blue smoke to come out of my exhaust on a BMW 320 d 2005?

This problem occurs infrequently and last for a bout 5 minutes. It stops on its on or if I pull in and turn off the engine and then on again. I am told it is the turbo if the smoke is balck. There is no oil in the exhaust pipe or splashes on the bumber. What is causing ocassional blue smoke to come out of my exhaust on a BMW 320 d 2005?Blue smoke is engine oil. Like Brandon says, it sounds like valve guide seals. These are little rubber boots that are supposed to keep motor oil from leaking down the valve bodies thru the valve bearings into the cylinders. Considering that these little boots go up and down between 1-3 thousand times a minute, little tears develop.

Likely you have such a small amount leaking that while you are driving, the oil is burned up and the smoke is not even noticed. However, when you shut the engine off, some of the oil leaks down and just sets on the piston head waiting for you to start the engine back up. This is the big puff you see and then it has to burn off. This is not a potentially damaging situation to your car's engine but it will cause excessive carbon build up. The tear will also get worse and the smoke will become constant.

Make sure to monitor your engine's oil levels closely, adding oil when necessary. What is causing ocassional blue smoke to come out of my exhaust on a BMW 320 d 2005?
Your car is fairly new and it should not emit blue smoke and before jumping into conclusion I suggest that you check your oil level every morning before starting your car. There should be no significant oil consumption and if it is then I am afraid that some oil rings on the pistons has gave in and needs replacement. What is causing ocassional blue smoke to come out of my exhaust on a BMW 320 d 2005?1) check yr lub oil level,it could be over the level.which causes the lub oil to be burnt in the chamber.

if lub oil in level,it could be the valve seals.

Since is diesel car ,it could come from contaminated diesel or unburnt diesel due to faulty injector nozzles or the fuel pum itself.

If your car is under warranty, please drive to the dealers without cracking your head..What is causing ocassional blue smoke to come out of my exhaust on a BMW 320 d 2005?
The above post is correct. Blue smoke always means the engine is burning oil, regardless of manufacturer. Check your dipstick, maybe too much was added at the last change. Oil is somehow getting into the combustion chamber. A mechanic will be able to tell if you have a worn piston ring. What is causing ocassional blue smoke to come out of my exhaust on a BMW 320 d 2005?inversion of accumulation of suet caused by lack of highway driving/ city driving only is hard on any engine...What is causing ocassional blue smoke to come out of my exhaust on a BMW 320 d 2005?
Could be a blown head gasket as well. Check your coolant, if it's low or black that means it is definitley the head gasket.
Sounds like valve seals. Oil is leaking thru your valves and into the cylinders, from the way you make it sound anyways.
