Doing first oil change on 2000 BMW 540i, where does the copper ring for the filter go?

I found the oil that was recommended for it and the oil filter. It comes with a copper ring along with the rubber O ring. I have no idea where the copper ring goes.Doing first oil change on 2000 BMW 540i, where does the copper ring for the filter go?This is a crush washer which is used to replace the old crush washer after you drain the oil from the oil pan. This washer goes on the plug that you remove from the oil pan to drain the oil. Make sure the old washer is not stuck on either the oil pan or on the plug before you replace the plug.Doing first oil change on 2000 BMW 540i, where does the copper ring for the filter go?I've never dealt with this car but I believe I know the deal. The copper ring isn't the same size as the oil filter correct? It's actually a gasket for a crankcase plug (in newer bmws it's on the side) that you can drain oil from. Most bmw service technicians (at the time) actually removed oil from cars via the dipstick using an oil extractor rather than an actual plug. I'm not even sure if the oil pan has a plug or if you have to use the crankcase plug.

That's just some general stuff I've accumulated over the years...might not be the case.Doing first oil change on 2000 BMW 540i, where does the copper ring for the filter go?Don't know, but remove the old filter and examine it and its mating surface carefully. the answer may present itself. Also, perhaps the filter fits various car models, some of which use the copper gasket while yours does not.
