How much does it cost to replace 2nd gear synchronizer on bmw 323i 5 speed.?

2000 bmw 323i

please include dealership price if you know....

I think the problem is synchronizer because a thuding noise is made from rear of car when it is shifted into 2nd gear....How much does it cost to replace 2nd gear synchronizer on bmw 323i 5 speed.?I think it is rear sub frame mount. These rubber mounts gets weak over time, and gets stretched as you accelerate, then when rubber pulls the sub-frame in, it would end up hitting the car frame, creating loud metal hitting noise. It happens that this noise only happens in low gear (1 - 2) and only happens when trying to shift gears (because the weight of the car shifts from back to front when you shift)

The harder you accelerate, harder your body frame gets hit. And when it gets bad enough, the car may drift side to side as it begin developing differential play.

Pressing the bushings out requires BMW specialty tools, and if you have access to the tool, this can be done in 1.5 hours. if you don't have the tool, it could take a whole day. Also the size of the bushings are different from each series of cars so specialty tool may be sold under "Master Mushing kit" that includes tools for ALL BMWs (this can get pretty expensive)

BMW don't replace synchronizers. They replace the whole transmission if they believe synchronizer replacement is necessary. Takes about 10 hours of labor to drop the transmission and mount a new one ($1000 - $1500 plus cost of new rebuilt ZF transmission)

BMW OE drive-shaft U-joints are also not replaceable. Rebuilt drive-shaft can be purchased around $800.How much does it cost to replace 2nd gear synchronizer on bmw 323i 5 speed.?A syncro ring is going to cost - hope it's just the u joint instead. How much does it cost to replace 2nd gear synchronizer on bmw 323i 5 speed.?That sounds more like a U-joint, not a synchro. Synchro problems will cause a grinding noise from the transimission.

Crawl under the car, grab the drive shaft with your hands and twist it back and forth with the brakes set. Does it make the sound? Does it seem to have a significant amount of play? This repair will be a LOT cheaper than replacing one synchro.
