Whats the difference between a bmw 325i and a 325i e36, or is it the same thing?

I just bought a 325i, but i dont know what the e36 or e34 stand for? is it something different entirely? E36 stands for the engine in that car.. since the same engine may be used in different models; engines by themselves have their own "code".
